Ning‑Ning Kultura at Sining: A Cultural Show for a Cause Illuminates SLSU Stage

Southern Leyte State University, September 18, 2024 — A celebration of culture, artistry, and advocacy took center stage as Southern Leyte State University proudly hosted "Ning‑ning: A Cultural Show for a Cause."
Held as part of the university's annual intramural festivities, the event united students, faculty, and local audiences in a vibrant showcase of Filipino culture—all for a worthy cause. Ningning — a Filipino word which means sparkle, brilliance, shine. Truly, it captures the cultural show experience delivered by the Hudyaka Performing Arts Guild (HPAG) of Southern Leyte State University.
"Ning-Ning Kultura at Sining" is a written work by Ms. Shyn Luege Villaflores, the adviser of Teatro de SLSU and a member of the Hudyaka Performing Arts Guild (HPAG) at Southern Leyte State University (SLSU). This collaborative project involves the Office of Cultural Affairs, the Supreme Student Council, and the Public Affairs and Strategic Communications Department. The show presents a heartbreaking love story between Dodong and Ning-Ning, a woman who returns to the Philippines to celebrate a fiesta with her family. Set against the backdrop of traditional festivities, the narrative beautifully unfolds the romance between the two characters, drawing parallels to the enduring spirit of Filipino culture and identity. "Ning-Ning Kultura at Sining" is more than just a love story; it serves as a platform to showcase the diverse talents of HPAG student performers. Through compelling drama, expressive dance, and enchanting music, the performance highlights the students' artistic abilities.
The show features traditional dances and original Filipino music, combining a rich tapestry of cultural expressions that connect with the audience. Each performance, from lively folk dances to Kundiman's expressive melodies, reflects the vibrancy and depth of Filipino traditions. Additionally, the production highlights the university's commitment to artistic excellence and the preservation of Filipino culture, promoting a deeper appreciation for the richness of Philippine culture among students and the broader community. By bringing together various art forms, "Ning-Ning: Kultura at Sining" entertains and educates, inspiring pride in the nation's cultural legacy.
HPAG took the spotlight with a series of evocative and high-energy presentations that embodied both artistic expression and cultural pride. More than a performance spectacle, Ning‑ning was also a fundraiser. Proceeds from the event were dedicated to supporting the future activities and engagements of the Hudyaka Performing Arts Guild. These include training workshops, local and national competitions, and cultural outreach programs that aim to elevate the university's artistic presence beyond campus grounds.
