Dr. Prose Ivy Guasa Yepes is the third and the current university president of Southern Leyte State University. In all of her personal and professional undertakings, she anchors to Proverbs 3:5-6 hence, she trusts in the Lord with all her heart and does not lean on her own understanding.

Prior to her presidency, she served as the Vice President for Research Development and Extension.  With her grit and excellence, she made strides starting as Instructor 1 at the then Tomas Oppus Normal College, in San Isidro, Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte. She then became the Dean of Higher Education of Tomas Oppus from 2005 to 2006 and served as a Campus Administrator of SLSU-Tomas Oppus from 2006 to 2013.  She is a full-fledged professor by virtue of NBC 461 on October 2014. 

As a research project leader by heart, Dr. Yepes has brought tremendous recognitions and distinctions that adds acclamation, grandeur and glory to the university. Among her significant contributions are the CHED Accreditation of SLSU’s research journals; the first university - wide Review and Evaluation of the Five - Year RDE Agenda and Plans for SLSU; revision of RDE Manual; the 2014 International Research Congress and Business Forum on Rubber and Freshwater Prawn; and the monthly researcher’s capability building activities. 

One of the most outstanding features of Dr. Yepes’ term as the Vice President of Research Development and Extension was the production of SLSU’s referred journals where she served as the managing editor of the 2013 and 2014 issues. The Journal of Educational and Human Resources Development (JEHRD) and The Journal of Science, Engineering and Technology (JSET) are both CHED Category B accredited. During her presidency, she transformed these journals pulling off both the desired Journal Incentive Program (JIP) grant of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the even more zealous  and highly- competitive ASEAN Citation Index (ACI). SLSU takes pride on these distinct achievement as it is the lone university in the entire Visayas and Mindanao that houses two (2) ASEAN Citation Indexed journals. At the time of writing, there are only 51 ACI journals coming from the Philippines. 

Pandemic has not hinder Dr. Yepes from demonstrating her leadership skills and functions as during those times, she extended full support in Business Continuity plans and projects in mitigating the spread of the virus.  An outstanding SLSU extension project of 2020 named The Southern Leyte Automated Contact Tracing System (SL-ACTS) was conceptualized by SLSU IT experts. It has been adopted by the local government of Sogod and later on by the Province of Southern Leyte.

Remaining true to the university’s mission, Dr. Yepes lead the way as the university commits to be a smart and green university. With the 24. 5 million project proposal approved by CHED, the university continuously develops projects and ICT infrastructures intended to enhance teaching and learning and improve flexible learning. She demonstrates leadership skills and a compassionate attitude by supporting in the university’s vision of creating an inclusive society and a sustainable world by rendering extension services hand in hand with academics, research and innovation.

Dr. Yepes has earned many distinguished awards including; Best Dissertation awarded by Cebu Normal University and by PAGE Region 7; Outstanding Performance as an Instructor; Educator of the Year Award, Lingkod SLSU Award and SLSU Tomas Oppus Campus Researcher. Other awards she received in 2017 were the Garbo Sa CNU and Outstanding Southern Leyte in the field of educational leadership, industry research, extension and instruction.

She is also a CSC PAG-ASA Individual Awardee of Regional Honor Awards Program (HAP). During her leadership, SLSU earned the Highest Percentage of Accredited Programs over the total accreditable programs (1992- 2019). Certainly she has ushered SLSU to greater heights.

Staunched in steering the university to be a leading higher education institution that is constantly thirsting for innovation and development, Dr. Yepes continuously takes part in various conferences both local and international, as a speaker or a participant. With SLSU in her heart and the vision in her mind, she takes home everything that is good and beneficial to the institution as a whole.

A BS Agriculture alumna (Cum Laude) of the then Visayas State College of Agriculture, now VSU in Baybay City, Leyte. Dr. Yepes majored in Plant Protection. She obtained her Master of Arts in Education major in Science Education and Doctor in Education major in Science Education from Cebu Normal University in Cebu City. 

A native of Divisoria, Bontoc Southern Leyte, she was born on August 13, 1969, the eldest among the five children of Prospero Abarca Guasa and Olivia Lopez Guasa. She is married to Penuel Amora Yepes and they are blessed with three children, Kenrich Helm, Antje Katrin and Aljanne Hali. She is also a doting and proud grandma of Kailey Margaux.

On December 19, 2014, she was appointed as the third university president of Southern Leyte State University by the Board of Regents. On December 14, 2018, the Board unanimously approved her re- appointment, and is now serving her second term and continuously creates her legacy as the university president.
