Comprehensive Tourism Development Blueprint for LGU Malitbog: Balancing Growth and Sustainability
Malitbog, a beautiful town in Southern Leyte, is taking steps to develop its tourism in a way that benefits both the community and the environment. Known for its natural beauty and rich culture, Malitbog has created the Malitbog Southern Leyte Sustainable Tourism Development Plan to ensure its tourism growth is both responsible and sustainable. This effort, led by Christian Errol B. Bandalan, Kristin O. Espita, Ma. Gia R. Caro, Jasmin S. Dayunan, and Lucila B. Bacalla, was presented during the International Extension Innovation Conference (IEIC) 2024. The plan focuses on balancing the town’s growth while protecting its natural and cultural treasures.
The plan is guided by three key ideas. The first is "Difficult Necessity," which means recognizing the challenges of creating a good tourism plan that works for everyone. The second is "Desirable Inclusivity," emphasizing the importance of involving the community in every step of the process. The third is "Responsive and Proactive," ensuring the town is ready to adapt and grow responsibly.
To create this plan, the LGU worked on several important activities. They held meetings with community members and local businesses to gather ideas and support. They also conducted studies to understand the town’s environment and culture better, provided training for local leaders, and formally approved the plan to ensure it could be implemented effectively. These steps were all aimed at protecting Malitbog’s beauty while creating jobs and opportunities for the community.
The plan includes eco-friendly practices and focuses on managing visitors carefully to avoid harming the environment. It also encourages local businesses to take part in tourism, ensuring that the benefits are felt by the community. By protecting its resources and promoting responsible tourism, Malitbog is setting a great example for other towns in the region.
During the International Extension Innovation Conference (IEIC) 2024, the plan was recognized as a strong step toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth and SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities. Malitbog’s tourism plan shows that it is possible to grow while taking care of the environment and supporting local people.
This blueprint ensures that Malitbog remains a beautiful and welcoming destination for future generations. By focusing on sustainability and community involvement, Malitbog proves that thoughtful planning can create lasting benefits for everyone.
