SLSU GIS Tech Center, FCSIT concludes Building Resilience Using Open Mapping Tools extension activity in LGU Malitbog
The GIS Tech Center, in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT), has successfully concluded its three-day extension activity titled "Building Resilience Using Open Mapping Tools." The program, which ran from July 29, 2024 to July 31, 2024 focused on equipping municipal personnel with essential skills in using Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, specifically through the open mapping tools. Participants engaged in hands-on training sessions, fieldwork, learning how to apply GIS tools to effectively map and analyze data relevant to planning and disaster risk reduction management.
A significant highlight of the closing ceremony was the handover of copyrighted manuals by the GIS Tech Center titled, "GIS Application for Disaster Risk Reduction Using QGIS: Location-Specific for Malitbog, Southern Leyte," the manuals were presented to Engr. Aproniano D. Taña Jr., Officer-in-Charge of the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator (MPDC), and Engr. Bryan M. Javier, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (MDRRMO) of Malitbog.
The successful conclusion of this extension activity underscores the commitment of the GIS Tech Center and FCSIT to support local government units in building resilient communities through advanced technological solutions and knowledge transfer. This initiative not only empowers municipal personnel but also fosters a culture of preparedness and proactive risk management. This also aims to target the following Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
