SLSU Strengthens IP Capacity with IPOPHL Experts in Mechanical, Chemical, and IT Fields Through Specialized Training

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), through its Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) under the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office (KTTO), successfully conducted the “Advancing IP Excellence in Engineering, Chemical, and IT Disciplines Across SLSU Campuses” on March 25-27, 2025, at the Multipurpose Academic Building. This three-day training aimed to strengthen the university’s intellectual property (IP) capabilities by equipping designated faculty and administrative staff from each of SLSU’s six campuses with essential knowledge and skills in IP systems, patent searching, Freedom to Operate (FTO) analysis, and patent drafting.
Four resource speakers from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) facilitated the sessions: Engr. Eric C. Paden for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Engr. Wilfredo O. Calaguan for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mr. Dindo O. Dumali for ICT, and Mr. Romeo Jason Padulla for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering. The training was designed to develop competent patent drafters in each campus, ensuring that SLSU can efficiently support researchers and innovators in protecting their technologies. Participants included faculty members and administrative staff identified as representatives for their respective campuses.
A key feature of the training was the two breakout sessions tailored for specific disciplines. The first breakout session for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, led by Engr. Eric C. Paden and Mr. Romeo Jason Padulla, focused on patent search strategies, FTO analysis, and drafting techniques relevant to mechanical and chemical innovations. The second breakout session for Information and Communication Technology, facilitated by Engr. Wilfredo O. Calaguan and Mr. Dindo O. Dumali, addressed software-related patents, ICT innovation trends, and challenges in drafting ICT-related patent applications.
The ITSO-KTTO remains committed to advancing IP awareness, protection, and commercialization within SLSU. By equipping faculty and staff with IP expertise, the university strengthens its role in fostering innovation, technology transfer, and industry collaboration. This initiative is part of SLSU’s ongoing efforts to enhance its research ecosystem and maximize the impact of its technological developments..
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, enhancing the knowledge and skills of faculty and staff to foster a culture of innovation and research; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, promoting technological advancements through IP protection and commercialization; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, strengthening collaborations between SLSU and IPOPHL to drive impactful research and development.
