Southern Leyte State University, San Ricardo LGU unveil Project AMUMA
On August 6, 2024, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Ricardo solidified their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management). The signing ceremony took place at the Municipal Hall of San Ricardo.
The MOA signing was attended by key figures including Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES); Hon. Roy Y. Salinas, Municipal Mayor of San Ricardo; Lauro J. Elejorde Jr., Municipal Agriculturist; Dr. Melvin S. Sarsale, RIES Head of SLSU-San Juan Campus; and other notable members from both SLSU-San Juan and the San Ricardo community.
Project AMUMA aims to enhance financial literacy and foster "agripreneurship" among marginalized farmers and fishermen. By offering targeted Financial Literacy and Agripreneurship Training, the program seeks to boost income and improve living standards for these communities. The initiative aspires to reach 10,000 farmers and fishermen across Southern Leyte. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals #1: No Poverty; #2: Zero Hunger; #4: Quality Education; #8: Decent Work & Economic Growth; and #5: Gender Equality, this project underscores a commitment to comprehensive community development.
In his address during the ceremony, Mayor Roy Y. Salinas delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing his strong belief in the transformative power of financial literacy. His impassioned speech left a lasting impression, underlining how the program could significantly impact and change many lives in the community.
Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, representing Dr. Jude A. Duarte, University President, expressed excitement about the launch of Project AMUMA. Dr. Sy highlighted that this initiative marks a crucial step in enhancing economic opportunities for marginalized sectors in Southern Leyte. The collaboration with LGU San Ricardo is anticipated to set a positive precedent for similar efforts in other municipalities across the province.
