SLSU Empowers Planning Officers with Grant Writing Skills to Achieve Financial Sustainability
On September 5, 2024, the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services, in collaboration with the University Planning and Development Office (UPDO), conducted a capacity-building activity titled “Planning for a Financially Self-Sufficient University: A Grants Proposal Training for Planning Officers” at the RIES Building of Southern Leyte State University – Main Campus.
Equipping the University’s Planning Officers with the necessary skills to craft quality grant proposals is crucial for achieving the goal of becoming a financially self-sufficient institution. This training is also in preparation for the upcoming budget call for the fiscal year 2026.
The activity was attended by Planning Officers from all campuses, along with Mr. Leo A. Omamalin, Director of University Planning and Development, Dr. Dewoowoogen P. Baclayon, Vice President for Administration and Finance, and Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension. The training’s distinguished expert, Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, Editor-in-Chief of Public Health Challenges and RD Leader of the RDLead Program at Southern Leyte State University, is a globally recognized health scientist, researcher, and financial expert.
Dr. Prisno highlighted the importance of developing a sustainable business model for resource generation. He also shared insights on potential foundations and corporate entities, both local and international, with which the University could collaborate and submit proposals. He stressed that successful proposals must have strong "selling points," align with the vision and objectives of the organizations, and champion their causes to increase the likelihood of securing funding.
This training serves as an introduction to a series of sessions that will focus on writing, presenting, and critiquing grant proposals. It also supports the realization of Sustainable Development Goal No. 17: Partnership for the Goals, by promoting effective public, public-private, and civil society partnerships. These initiatives are crucial to revitalizing global efforts for sustainable development.
