Innovating with Integrity: SLSU Discusses IP Application and Bioethics in Research Outputs
On August 16, 2024, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) concluded its series of academic activities with a critical discussion on the application of intellectual property (IP) from research outputs and the ethical considerations that accompany it. Held at the RIES Conference Room, this event provided a platform for researchers, scholars, and academic leaders to explore the intersection of innovation, ethics, and intellectual property management.
The session was led by Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, NRCP-RD Leader, who shared his extensive knowledge on the complexities of IP in the context of academic research. His presentation emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property rights while ensuring that innovations derived from research are ethically sound and beneficial to society.
Participants were introduced to best practices in IP management, particularly in how to navigate the legal frameworks that govern intellectual property in the Philippines and internationally. Mr. Jerico B. Ogaya, NRCP-RD Lead Assistant, provided insights into the practical aspects of securing patents, copyrights, and trademarks for research outputs. He also discussed the strategic importance of IP in enhancing the value and impact of research, particularly in fields related to health and technology.
The discussion also delved into the ethical considerations that must guide the application of research outputs. Dr. Lucero-Prisno highlighted the need for responsible innovation, stressing that while IP protection is crucial, it must not come at the expense of ethical standards. This is particularly important in health-related research, where the implications of innovations can have profound effects on individuals and communities.
This event aligns with SDG 9 by encouraging the responsible use of intellectual property to drive sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. By integrating bioethics into discussions on IP, SLSU is setting a high standard for integrity in research, ensuring that its scholars not only innovate but do so with a deep sense of responsibility.
The session concluded with a forward-looking discussion on how SLSU can continue to lead in the ethical management of intellectual property. Engr. Khorina O. Aguilar, Director of Knowledge Technology Transfer, outlined the university's ongoing initiatives to support researchers in navigating the complexities of IP and bioethics. These initiatives include workshops, legal support, and collaboration with industry partners to ensure that SLSU’s research outputs are both innovative and ethically grounded.
The "Innovating with Integrity" discussion underscores SLSU's commitment to advancing research that is not only groundbreaking but also ethically responsible. By addressing the dual challenges of IP protection and bioethics, SLSU is preparing its researchers to make meaningful contributions to society, ensuring that their innovations have a positive and lasting impact. This event highlights the university's role as a leader in ethical research and innovation, setting a benchmark for academic institutions across the region.
