SLSU and LGU Macrohon Collaborate for Agricultural Development through MOA Signing
On September 13, 2024, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was formalized between Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Macrohon at the SB Conference Room in the Legislative Building, Macrohon, Southern Leyte. This partnership marks the beginning of a joint initiative aimed at promoting agricultural innovation, community development, and sustainable livelihoods within the municipality.
The project, an integral part of SLSU's Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES), aims to empower local farmers and fishermen with new skills and resources that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on No Poverty (#1), Zero Hunger (#2), Quality Education (#4), Decent Work & Economic Growth (#8), and Gender Equality (#5). By enhancing agricultural practices and offering agripreneurship training, the project seeks to uplift marginalized communities in Macrohon.
Several distinguished guests attended the signing ceremony, including Dr. Jude A. Duarte, University President of SLSU; Hon. Alan Jose K. Aroy, Mayor of Macrohon; Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for RIES; and Adelfa C. Diola, Science Research Specialist II. Also present was Dr. Frederick C. Aniga, Campus Director of SLSU-Maasin City Campus and the focal person for the Macrohon project.
During the ceremony, Dr. Duarte emphasized the university's commitment to fostering rural development through agricultural advancement. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and local governments in driving sustainable development and improving the lives of farmers and fishermen in the region.
Mayor Aroy expressed his gratitude for the partnership, noting that the project reflects the shared goal of both the university and the local government in addressing pressing issues such as poverty and unemployment within the agricultural sector. He reiterated the LGU’s support in ensuring the project’s success and sustainability.
The event concluded with the signing of the MOA, symbolizing a unified effort to create lasting impact through research-based agricultural solutions, capacity-building programs, and financial literacy education for the community. The collaboration between SLSU and LGU Macrohon serves as a significant step toward achieving socio-economic resilience and enhancing the quality of life in Southern Leyte.
With this new partnership, the municipality of Macrohon is poised to benefit from increased agricultural productivity, improved livelihoods, and a stronger local economy, paving the way for long-term growth and sustainable development.
