Tales, Reading, Engagement, and Treats (TREAT) for Tampoong
Last November 30, 2024, the University Library-Learning Commons celebrated the culmination of the 34th Library and Information Services Month and the 90th National Book Week at the Barangay Covered Court, Tampoong, Sogod, Southern Leyte. This event marked the close of a vibrant month-long celebration, blending education, community, and compassion.
The culmination doubled as a community outreach initiative, carried out in collaboration with the CLiMCEP Team. Sharing aligned values, this partnership aimed to give back to the community in impactful ways. Here’s a glimpse of what transpired:
Book Donation Turnover: Books collected from the Book Donation Drive (November 4-29, 2024) were officially handed over to the Barangay Tampoong Council for their Community Library. This gesture emphasized the power of reading and access to knowledge for all.
Reading and Storytelling Sessions: Children from various grade levels, daycare, and kindergarten participated in interactive reading and storytelling activities. Led by librarians, these sessions brought joy, imagination, and learning to the young minds of Barangay Tampoong, sparking a love for reading and lifelong learning.
Feeding Program: Aligned with SDG 2: Zero Hunger, this initiative provided nourishment and smiles to children, ensuring everyone left with a happy heart and a full stomach. The program contributed to their overall health and well-being, fostering both physical and mental growth.
This meaningful outreach was facilitated by the Director of Learning Commons and Library Services, Ms. Geanrose L. Colonia, RL, MLIS, alongside campus librarians from SLSU’s external campuses:
- – SLSU Bontoc Campus
- – SLSU Tomas Oppus Campus
- – SLSU Maasin City Campus
- – SLSU San Juan Campus
- – College Librarian I, SLSU Main Campus
Also present were representatives from the CLiMCEP Team, Dr. Dinah Catamco and Dr. Ruda Palen, serving as Project Leaders.
This heartfelt event achieved not only SDG 2: Zero Hunger but also SDG 4: Quality Education, further highlighting the commitment of the University Library-Learning Commons to create meaningful impact through education and community service. The day concluded with laughter, smiles, and a strengthened bond between SLSU and Barangay Tampoong.
Thank you to everyone who made this initiative a success! Together, let’s continue empowering communities and fostering a love for learning.
