Southern Leyte State U YouthMappers on their MapaKalamidad.ph journey towards disaster preparedness and resilience-building in Sogod Southern Leyte
The Southern Leyte State U YouthMappers embarked on a journey funded by Mapakalamidad.ph titled, "Enhancing Disaster Awareness and Preparedness in Sogod: A Geo-Resilience Outreach Initiative," this project set out to arm local communities with the essential tools and knowledge in times of facing natural disasters.
In their first activity, the SLSU YouthMappers crafted Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on MapaKalamidad.ph. These materials, comprising detailed modules and informative brochures, were meticulously designed to educate stakeholders on the significance and practical application of MapaKalamidad.ph. A total of 60 modules and 60 brochures were crafted and distributed to key stakeholders, including DRRM personnel of LGU Bontoc and SLSU YouthMappers members, ensuring widespread dissemination of critical information.
Recognizing the importance of capacity-building, SLSU YouthMappers conducted comprehensive training sessions. Two batches of 50 members underwent intensive training on April 24, 2024, and May 8, 2024, equipping them with proficient skills in utilizing mapakalamidad.ph effectively. This initiative not only enhanced their technical prowess but also empowered them to champion disaster preparedness within their respective communities.
Expanding their reach further, SLSU YouthMappers extended their training efforts to engage 45 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) representatives from Sogod, Southern Leyte, on June 4, 2024. This inclusive approach aimed to cultivate a cadre of informed youth leaders adept at leveraging mapakalamidad.ph to bolster community resilience against natural disasters.
During an extension activity hosted by the GIS Tech Center for LGU Bontoc on June 5, 2024, the SLSU YoutMappers seized the opportunity to promote the functionalities and benefits of MapaKalamidad.ph among LGU personnel. This initiative not only facilitated knowledge transfer but also reinforced partnerships essential for effective disaster management at the grassroots level.
Currently, the SLSU YouthMappers embarked on the creation of community-centric maps. These maps delineate critical lifeline units within the Municipality of Sogod. Upon completion, these maps will be formally presented to relevant stakeholders, enhancing localized disaster response strategies and bolstering community resilience.
In summary, the receipt of the mapakalamidad.ph grant has empowered the Southern Leyte State University YouthMappers to spearhead transformative initiatives in disaster preparedness and resilience-building in Sogod Southern Leyte community. Through strategic training, extensive outreach, and the development of essential resources, they have not only strengthened their own capacities but have also made significant strides towards creating a more resilient future for Southern Leyte.
