Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) launched its first-ever university-wide Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) training workshop for the English Faculty, aimed at enhancing the teaching competencies of English educators. The workshop commenced on November 19, 2024, at the SLSU Plenary Hall and culminated with its final session on December 6, 2024.
For this three-day program, SLSU invited Ms. Maureen Rooney, an English Language Fellow from the US Embassy, to be the esteemed resource speaker. Ms. Rooney shared her extensive expertise, offering innovative strategies and tools for designing effective English language curricula. Her gamified and collaborative approach engaged the participants through interactive activities and discussions.
During the first session on November 19 at the Plenary Hall, SLSU Main Campus, Ms. Rooney led an engaging session on crafting effective and student-centered curricula for ESL learners, equipping faculty with the skills to design structured and flexible language programs. The second session, held on November 26 at the SLSU Tomas Oppus Mini-Theater, explored the role of technology in language teaching. Ms. Rooney introduced various tools and digital platforms to enhance classroom interaction and engage students in more dynamic learning experiences. The final session, held on December 6 at the Hotel de SLSU, focused on specialized ESL topics, including strategies for teaching advanced learners and addressing diverse language needs in the classroom. Through these sessions, Ms. Rooney guided the faculty in exploring new approaches to enhance language teaching and improve student outcomes.
