Empowering IT Education: PSITE-SLSU Workshop for IT Educators
The Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators – Eastern Visayas Chapter (PSITE), in partnership with Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), conducted a two-day workshop on community extension for information technology faculty members from various universities in Region 8 on April 4-5, 2024, at the SLSU-Main Campus.
Trainers from SLSU discussed extension frameworks, participatory planning, gender integration, risks, project monitoring, necessary elements that ideally should be integrated into an extension proposal, and various methods of impact assessment. The seminar workshop is part of the activities of the SLSU Graduate School Extension Project Sustaining Academic Excellence through Research and Extension for IT Educators in Region 8. 60 participants from various higher education institutions (HEI) in the region attended the activity. While most of the participants were regular information technology faculty members, some of those who participated held key positions in research and extension in their respective universities. A representative from one private university also joined the participants.
During the question and answer, some participants brought up the idea of creating a regional organization dedicated to assisting participating HEIs in the extension area, which will function as a support and consultation hub, especially in impact assessment. Impromptu consultations were also held right after the training with SLSU Graduate School Director Dr. Rhoderick Malangsa, who assisted concerned HEIs facing challenges in passing extension evaluation requirements.
PSITE and SLSU look forward to replicating the principles, methods, and strategies discussed in the seminar-workshop in the universities of the participating HEIs.
