Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes delivers the SLSU Address 2017: “SLSU in the 21st Century: A Crucial Transformation”
“Hugyaw is historic” – Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes, the Southern Leyte State University President started her speech. She congratulated the SLSU faculty and staff, key officials, and students for another historic year of the institution. With a sweet smile painted on her face, she greeted SLSU a “Happy Birthday!”
She discussed and enumerated the things happened for the past years that made SLSU in its feat, that made it as one of the competitive universities not only in the national level but in international as well. The fact that we passed the AACUP and that we’re now in the second stage of the ISO 2008 version, these just proved that our very own university wasn’t stagnant. And yes, it’s always worth the doing as SLSU achieved great things through a step-by-step process.
For the past year, the school made historic names that truly reflected the quality and competent teaching it will always had. The College of Criminal Justice became third place among schools nationwide during the LCC last year. The College of Teacher Education as one of the center of development was also awarded.
The university also increased number of scholarships, facilities and others. Research areas and extension, publication and even international affairs were widened. These were the living proof that the administration was awake and functional.
To strengthen curricular programs, SLSU administration was planning to establish another college.
“We are entering the age of empowerment…”, as she put it. “We should be equipped with ideas in local, national and global scenarios”, she added. How to empower? Saying that we should foster academic and internationalism by providing the students more opportunities and through shifting traditional teaching to non-traditional pedagogy, whilst creating a platform that’ll create a high impact to our graduates by establishing and exposing them to the real field of research.
