SLSU Renews MOU with KOPEC for Cross-Cultural Initiatives and Sustainable Community

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) and the Korea-Philippines Cultural and Educational Exchange Center (KOPEC) renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 16, 2025, at the SLSU Board Room.
Originally signed in July 2022, this partnership launched a community outreach program on October 30, 2022, supporting children whose families were severely affected by Typhoon Odette. Through this renewed partnership, SLSU and KOPEC can further strengthen their shared vision of building a globally engaged academic community.
Furthermore, during the declaration of commitment, the president of KOPEC, Dr. Hoon Young Choi, guaranteed that KOPEC would support the University in offering Korean language instruction and cultural activities for faculty, students, and staff, promoting personal and professional growth, and developing globally competitive graduates who are socially responsible, internationally cooperative, and highly employable.
Additionally, KOPEC offered to assist Southern Leyte State University in organizing outreach and extension programs, such as dental and medical mission, as part of the University's commitment to social responsibility.
The Korea-Philippines Educational and Cultural Exchange (KOPEC) is an organization that facilitates bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of the Philippines through the implementation of programs and initiatives focused on education and cultural exchange. In partnership with the Korean government, KOPEC aims to strengthen mutual understanding and sustain long-term academic and cultural collaboration between the two nations
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 11, as Southern Leyte State University strives to build inclusive, safe, and resilient communities that address the needs of all individuals and contribute to the overall progress of the local and broader society through quality education and cross-cultural initiatives.
The renewal ceremony was graced by key representatives from both institutions. Representing the Korea–Philippines Education Cultural Exchange Center (KOPEC) were Dr. Hoon Young Choi, President, and Mr. Lee Yang Ho, Member and Missionary. Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) was represented by University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte, along with key university officials including Dr. Dewoowoogen P. Baclayon, Vice President for Administration and Finance; Dr. Constantino G. Medilo, Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services; and Dr. Marie Khul C. Langub, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services.
Also in attendance were Dr. Ingrid M. Uy, Director of the External Linkages and International Affairs Office; Dr. Dinah F. Catamco, Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management; Dr. Aldwin D. Teves, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Ms. Alma Arnejo and Ms. Rose Mae Ugat, Program Heads; Mr. Roselleto L. Cadavos and Ms. Lieza Noelle Malinao, Area Chairs; and Mr. Exekiel Ed A. Elizan, Head of the CFLC.
