SLSU Faculty advances Molecular Biology Skills through ASMAR8 Training at PGC Visayas
In a bid to enhance molecular biology research in Region 8, four faculty members from Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) participated in an advanced amplicon sequencing training program at the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Visayas, University of the Philippines - Miag-ao Campus, Iloilo from July 8 to 12, 2024.
The program, dubbed ASMAR8 – "Amplicon Sequencing Made Available for Region 8" – is a strategic initiative by PGC aimed at strengthening the molecular biology capabilities of academic institutions in the region. The training provided participants with practical experience in state-of-the-art molecular techniques essential for next-generation sequencing (NGS).
Prior to the hands-on sessions, participants attended a foundational lecture on molecular biology and bioinformatics on July 5. This preparatory session laid the groundwork for the intensive laboratory work that followed.
The practical training covered crucial aspects of NGS workflows. In the omics laboratory, participants engaged in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols, mastered library preparation techniques, and learned to load samples onto sequencing instruments. The bioinformatics training focused on processing genomic data, from initial setup and quality control to sequence assembly and subsequent data analysis.
Ms. Alieza Del Socorro from SLSU-Bontoc expressed her appreciation for the training, emphasizing its potential to significantly advance their research initiatives at SLSU. “This experience will enable us to expand our research capabilities and establish stronger collaborations with PGC,” she remarked.
Mr. Nico Adam Antipala from SLSU-Hinunangan, while not new to these techniques, found the training to be a valuable refresher. “I am excited to share this knowledge with my colleagues and apply it to our research efforts at SLSU-Hinunangan, encourage potential collaborations,” he stated.
Also in attendance were faculty members Mr. Jimmy E. Salamida and Ms. Janine C. Dimzon, from SLSU-Bontoc.
SLSU’s participation in the ASMAR8 training aligns with its institutional goals of promoting research excellence and fostering innovation. By equipping its faculty with advanced molecular biology skills, SLSU aims to enhance its research capabilities, contribute to scientific knowledge, and drive regional development through cutting-edge research and collaborations.
