Spanning the Globe with a Purpose
Dr. Gloria M. Reyes, SLSU President, joined the Foreign Academic Trip to the United States (FAT-US) on April 20-27, 2014, together with other SUC Presidents of the country. The Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education initiated the Executive Development Program for SUCS.
The six-week Executive Course in Education Management and Leadership (ECEML) ended with the FAT-US. It is a fundamental approach in the Executive Course for experiential learning to further strengthen the intention to develop SUC Presidents to be “visionary leaders, skilled marketers and innovative entrepreneurs.”
“Aside from the possible international partnership with other US universities, I want to learn the effective strategies and best practices adopted by these universities and apply those that are suitable to SLSU that would further develop the university given the situation,” Reyes said.
The SUC Presidents visited Cornell University, SUNY System (State Universities of New York), Rutgers University and Alfred University, all situated in New York. These universities have one thing in common – their full support and sufficient funds for research and development activities. It proves their giving of great importance to research, technology transfer and commercialization.
A Memorandum of Understanding was forged between Cornell University and the five universities (SLSU, BU, VSU, ISU, ESSU) to collaborate in terms of research, faculty, students and extension. The FAT-US was not only an educational experience for the SUC Presidents but also promoted their “ONEness” as leaders and as educators. The SUC leaders attended the ECEML Graduation Ceremonies on May 6, 2014 at Diamond Hotel, Malate, Manila.

May 24 to 28, 2014, Dr. Reyes, together with Dr. Valerio Cabalo, VPAF, and Dr. Juanita Costillas, Dean of Graduate Studies, travelled to Vietnam to meet with Dr. Pham Tiet Khanh, Tra Vihn University Rector. It is good to note that on September 1, 2009, SLSU and TVU entered into a Bilateral Co-operation Agreement. The setting up of Master in Management (MM) as a Transnational Education (TNE) program in TVU was an offshoot of this Bilateral Agreement. The MM Program in TVU started in School Year 2011-2012 and has already produced graduates.
This meeting of leaders is aimed to continually work for a more stable partnership and discuss methods for the sustainable development of Master in Management program in Tra Vihn University, Vietnam.
