Relief in Action: SLSU Mobilizes Outreach for San Ricardo Landslide Victims

Driven by the spirit of compassion and solidarity, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) launched "Relief in Action", a donation drive and outreach program for families and students affected by the devastating landslide in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte on July 23, 2025.
The initiative aimed to mobilize resources and deliver immediate relief to impacted communities, particularly in the barangays of San Ramon, Esperanza, and Camang. With the core objectives of fostering a culture of volunteerism, compassion, and active citizenship, the university extended its hand to support 86 families and 18 SLSU students who were directly affected by the disaster. The source of funds for this initiative came from the collective contributions of SLSU employees university-wide, which amounted to ₱40, 190 and was used to purchase goods for the relief operations.
Spearheaded by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services, and Adelfa C. Diola, Director of Extension Services, the relief distribution was carried out by dedicated Extension Services staff, students, and Auxiliary Services representatives, including Nurse Maria Emelee Bascug and Karen Molina with her team.
Each household received a relief pack containing 5 kilograms of rice, noodles, canned goods, and bottled water—essential items aimed at providing short-term support to families in the immediate aftermath of the calamity.
The distribution covered the barangays of San Ramon, Esperanza, and Camang. In San Ramon, relief assistance reached 55 households and 6 SLSU students; in Esperanza, 5 SLSU students received support; and in Camang, 31 households and 7 SLSU students were aided.
This outreach program not only addressed urgent humanitarian needs but also showcased SLSU’s commitment to inclusive support, ensuring that vulnerable groups—men, women, children, and students—were not left behind in the recovery process.
“Relief in Action” reflects SLSU’s ongoing mission to go beyond academic excellence by strengthening community resilience through responsive and transformative extension services.
As recovery efforts continue, SLSU remains committed to walking with affected communities—one act of compassion at a time.
