SLSU Computer Engineering Students Named Top 10 Finalists in SIKAPTala 2025 Hackathon

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) proudly celebrates the achievement of its 3rd Year Computer Engineering students, who were recognized among the Top 10 finalists in the Hackathon Category of SIKAPTala 2025: The National CS & IT Competition, hosted by De La Salle University – Dasmariñas.
This year’s highly competitive event gathered 55 participating institutions from across the Philippines, bringing together the nation’s most promising student innovators to address pressing social and technological challenges.
Representing SLSU were students Rudjhont Garrido, Roy Hector Paloma, James Catajoy, Kyle Anthony Galdo, and Janine Anguring, under the mentorship of Engr. Emmanueal Cabanig. The team developed Buklod, a university mental health support platform designed to foster safe spaces and promote peer-to-peer support among students navigating academic and emotional stress.
Their solution aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 4 – Quality Education, by addressing mental health issues within academic communities and advocating for inclusive and supportive learning environments.
Though the team did not take home the championship title, their journey was filled with discovery, innovation, and purpose. Competing alongside the brightest minds in the country, the SLSU students showcased the best of what young Filipino engineers can offer — resilience, empathy, and a passion for creating meaningful change.
This achievement reflects the enduring Kingfisher spirit — humble in pursuit, proud in progress, and steadfast in its mission to build a better future through technology and compassion.
Congratulations, Team SLSU! Your journey has only just begun, and your vision for wellness, inclusion, and innovation makes us all proud.
