SLSU PICE hosts International Research Seminar

The Department of Civil Engineering, in its stride to academic excellence and global engagement, successfully hosted an International Research Seminar on July 23, 2025, at the Mini Theater, Southern Leyte State University, featuring Dr. Meinhard B. Cardenas, a professor of hydrology in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin, together with project collaborator Dr. Raymond Rodolfo.
With the compelling topic, “Devastation of a Coastal Aquifer from the Most Powerful Storm Ever: A Story of Resilience and Recovery,” the seminar spotlighted urgent issues on hydrogeological vulnerability, climate impacts, and coastal resilience. Dr. Cardenas, currently serving as the 2025 Birdsall-Dreiss-LaMoreaux Lecturer of the Geological Society of America Hydrogeology Division, shared critical insights from his research, inspiring future engineers and researchers to contribute to sustainable water and environmental solutions.
The event gathered key university officials including VPAA Dr. Constantino Medilo Jr., Faculty of Engineering Dean Engr. Melvin G. Obus, ELIA Director Dr. Ingrid M. Uy, and Research and Innovation Director Engr. Khorina Aguilar, alongside civil engineering faculty members and capstone civil engineering students.
This initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)—advancing interdisciplinary learning and global collaboration in building resilient and sustainable communities.
