SLSU Bontoc Assesses Suitability of Maac, Sogod for Milkfish Cage Culture
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Bontoc Campus, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and MSWDO – Sogod, conducted a site assessment in Brgy. Maac, Sogod Southern Leyte on August 19, 2024. This assessment is part of the “Enhancement and Development of the Agri-Fishery Sector in Southern Leyte” initiative under the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).
The project aims to establish a milkfish (bangus) floating cage, which will be managed by Maac Sustainable Livelihood Program Association, to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local community.
Faculty members of the Department of Fisheries and Department of Marine Biology at SLSU – Bontoc Campus consisting of the Research, Innovations and Extension Services (RIES) Head, Ms. Janine C. Dimzon, Jimmy Salamida (Faculty Dean), Ryan Tomol (RIES Coastal Resources Field Assistant), Alieza O. Del Socorro (Head, BS Marine Biology) and Liela Bejel (Faculty), performed a detailed site assessment on the water quality, biological presence and site characteristics to evaluate the suitability of the proposed area for bangus (milkfish) cage and culture and to give recommendations. The assessment aims to ensure success and sustainability, providing key recommendations for optimal results.
RIES Head Ms Janine C. Dimzon stated, “By involving local members in the management and operation of the floating cage, the project not only supports promotion of good aquaculture practices but also empowers residents with valuable skills and knowledge in fish farming.”
The team concluded the suitability of the proposed site for milkfish cage culture.
