SLSU-Hinunangan Faculty Enhances Expertise Through International PigHusbandry Training
Ms. Christselda Membreve, a faculty member of the Department of Agriculture at Southern Leyte State University - Hinunangan, recently completed an intensive four-week Agricultural Training Course on Pig Husbandry, hosted by the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry (ITCPH). Held from July 8 to August 2, 2024, the course provided Membreve with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills essential for modern swine farming, a valuable asset to her professional development and SLSU's goals in agricultural advancement.
The training program, designed to provide participants with a thorough understanding of pig husbandry, combined lectures, workshops, and practical exercises across eight core subjects. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, including swine farming techniques, and were evaluated through various assessments, including a final carousel moving exam and the creation of a traineeship report. To further enrich their learning, each participant developed and presented a re-entry plan detailing how they intend to apply their newly acquired knowledge to benefit their respective institutions.
Ms. Membreve's participation is a demonstration to SLSU-Hinunangan’s commitment to faculty development and continuous learning. Her attendance at the training aligns with the university’s mission to equip its educators with cutting-edge skills that will, in turn, enhance the institution’s agricultural programs and improve local farming practices.
On particular note, Membreve was among a select group of participants who excelled in the program. She was recognized with an Achiever Award for attaining the highest weighted average of 89.54, a prestigious honor reflecting her dedication and proficiency in the field.
The course, attended by agricultural professionals and individuals from various institutions, underscored the importance of developing expertise in swine farming. The ITCPH, a government agency under the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), is the only specialized training center on pig husbandry in Asia. Known for its highly competent technical personnel, ITCPH offers a wide range of courses focused on both large- and small-scale pig farming practices, including Swine Artificial Insemination, Waste Management, Meat Processing, and Animal Feedmilling Technology.
This achievement not only enhances Membreve's expertise but also strengthens SLSU's agricultural initiatives, ensuring that the university continues to contribute to the advancement of sustainable and efficient pig farming practices in the region.
