SLSU-TO Social Studies Faculty Attends Seminar-Workshop on Book Writing Essentials
Aspiring authors and seasoned educators gathered at the La Union Convention Center from August 1-3, 2024, for an immersive seminar-workshop titled “Style, Substance, and Power: Learn the Essentials and Technicalities of Book Writing” in the City of San Fernando, La Union. Organized by the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. – Ilocos Librarian Council (PLAI-IRLC) in collaboration with ICON Review and Training Center, the event featured a diverse lineup of experts aimed at refining the craft of book writing.
The workshop, spanning three days, was attended by SLSU-TO Social Studies Faculty members namely: Dr. Vicente S. Betarmos, Jr., Dr. Romulo L. Lanugan, and Enrique E. Balili, Jr. The sessions were designed to offer participants an in-depth understanding of book writing, from stylistic considerations to technical details. There were six sessions with prominent book writers and speakers: Dr. Feljone Ragma covered topics such as “Why Book Writing,” “Instructional Learning Material-Book Designs,” and “Organizing the Learning Material”; Dr. Nora A. Oredina addressed “Formulating Assessment and Learning Activities”; Dr. Rina H. Diaron discussed “Referencing: Citation Format”; and Atty. Diric Galanto presented on “Copyright Laws.” By the end of the seminar-workshop, participants had identified and produced their respective group outputs. The event also served as an avenue for discovering and developing book-writing skills, aimed at publishing learning materials for tertiary-level students.
A significant highlight of the event was the oath-taking ceremony for the new officers of the Association of Social Science Educators for Traditions and Treasures of the Philippines Incorporated (ASSETT). Dr. Romulo Lanugan was appointed to the Board of Trustees, and Enrique Balili Jr., MAEd, was named Regional Director for Region 8. This new organization aims to further the professional development of social science educators and enhance networking opportunities through future conventions and activities.
In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the seminar-workshop contributed to several key areas: Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10). Overall, the seminar-workshop was a resounding success, providing valuable knowledge and practical skills to its participants. It emphasized the importance of continuous learning and professional growth in the field of book writing and education, while also contributing to global goals of education, economic development, and equality.
