Dengue Awareness Campaign Enlightens SLSU-MCC Community
With the growing concern about dengue in the region, the Office of the Students Auxiliary Services (OSAS), particularly the Medical Health Services of Southern Leyte State University-Maasin City Campus (SLSU-MCC) conducted a seminar on DENGUE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: Keeping the School Safe on February 28, 2024, at SLSU-MCC second floor lobby.
The event gathered the third-year Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA) students at SLSU-MCC, underscoring the significance of collective action in combating dengue. The campaign aims to equip students with essential knowledge and strategies to protect both themselves and their communities.
"It's expensive to get sick nowadays", stated by Dr. Frederick Aniga, the campus director, in his welcome message of the said activity. According to InsularlifePh, the average hospital stay could range from P2,500 a night for private hospitals to P30,000 a night for ICU stays. This does not include doctors’ fees, laboratory fees, medicine, and other incidental costs.
A highlight of the campaign was the enlightening discourse delivered by the guest speaker Ada Adeline Buhe, a seasoned Medical Technologist and Program Coordinator. She delved into comprehensive strategies for the prevention and control of dengue disease, emphasizing the importance of public health interventions. Interactive sessions were conducted to educate students on the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, such as stagnant water in containers and tires, and implementing proper waste management practices. Students were also encouraged to seek medical attention promptly if they experienced symptoms of dengue, such as high fever, severe headache, and joint and muscle pain. Moreover, she stressed the critical role of rehydration as the primary treatment for dengue, urging individuals to prioritize hydration as a preventive measure.
The Dengue Awareness Campaign served as a pivotal platform for fostering awareness and instilling proactive habits among students. Thus, equipping students with practical knowledge and skills to combat the spread of dengue within their communities. SLSU-MCC continues its commitment to promoting health and well-being within the campus and beyond.
