SLSU Bontoc Faculty participates to joint Environmental Impact Assessment with MERF/UPMSI
Two researchers from SLSU Bontoc were invited to participate in assessing the mangrove resource in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines from September 29, to October 1, 2023. Ms Janine C. Dimzon of the Fisheries Program and Head of the Office of Research, Innovations and Extension Services (RIES) of SLSU-Bontoc, alongside Ryan P. Tomol of the Marine Biology Program, joined the team of marine biologists from the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation (MERF), an environment conservation organization, and the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UPMSI), under the leadership of Dr. Michael Atrigenio, trustee and President of the MERF.
"The assessment took us extra effort since the area is an unfamiliar territory, but having to collaborate with team of experts from MERF/UPMSI is a huge opportunity as it confirms and acknowledges SLSU-Bontoc’s expertise on mangrove assessment," Ms. Dimzon said when she was asked about her experience.
The recently completed mangrove assessment not only marked a significant milestone in enhancing our growing understanding on mangrove ecosystem conservation, but also, by working together and by establishing connections with MERF/UPMSI, more opportunities for impactful collaborative research and outreach initiatives within and the neighbouring regions are within reach.
Furthering and officially recognizing partnerships are currently in talks between the two parties.
