Southern Leyte State U hosts 1st National Extension Conference
The Research, Innovation, and Extension Services of Southern Leyte State University recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully hosting the first-ever National Extension Conference (NEC) on March 21-22, 2023.
This two-day event saw the participation of extensionists from various universities across the country, making it a grand success.
NEC was highly significant as it was attended by prominent government officials who strongly support the university's efforts in extension services to the communities.
Among the distinguished guests were Hon. Christopherson Yap, the Representative of the 2nd district of Southern Leyte, and Dr. Aldrin Darilag, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Chairperson of SLSU Governing Board.
Both Congressman Yap and Commissioner Darilag have been long-time advocates of community outreach programs and recognize the importance of higher education institutions in aiding local communities. They praised SLSU for its dedication to community service and encouraged the institution to continue its efforts in making a positive impact in the surrounding areas.
SLSU expresses its deepest appreciation to the participating institutions and extensionists who generously contributed their expertise and projects in the field of extension services, making this event a resounding success.
NEC featured prominent speaker. Dr. Arnold Sablan, Head of IP Management and and Technology Transfer Division, and Program Manager of ITSO Network, Intellectual Property of the Philippines, who delivered a compelling presentation on the significance of respecting cultural heritage in research and extension services.
Dr. Sablan emphasized the importance of obtaining intellectual patents for innovations and technologies developed and highlighted the need to involve the community as co-authors of innovation efforts.
His insights shed light on the vital role that cultural heritage and community involvement play in the success of research and innovation, and extension services’ initiatives.
On the 2nd day of the event, another speaker Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo, Jr., founder and CEO of the Institutes for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship (IRIS), shared valuable insights on the five-year research and innovation in the Philippine Development Plan for the 2023-2028. His learnings were particularly relevant for extensionists.
The National Extension Conference has recognized four outstanding papers across various tracks namely Marah Joy A. Nanglegan (Education Track) from Ifugao State University, Jorge P. Cabilin (Technology and Engineering track) from Bohol Island State University, Michelle P. Bono (Agriculture and Fisheries track) from Cavite State University, and Marissa I. Atis (Disaster Management Track) from Mariano Marcos State University.
The 1st NEC was done virtually and showcased the university's commitment to promoting research, innovation, and extension while strengthening partnerships with other academic institutions.
