Faculty, student researchers, innovators from SLSU win in DOST-TAPI's 2021 RICE competition
Three (3) out of four (4) entries of Southern Leyte State University won during the 2021 Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Eastern Visayas region.
Minerva Baclayon's "Composition of Sauce from Coconut Water" placed second under the Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model Category.
Baclayon's entry was about coconut water being one of the compositions in making “sauce" or condiments. She further discussed the steps and the process of how to make one.
Under Sibol Award for Outstanding Students Creative Research Category, students from the Department of Food Science and Technology (DFoST) also won second prize for their "A Food Seasoning and the Preparation Thereof" entry.
March Tresha Morano, Jolina Ladan, Emelos Ganoza, Mary Grace Dela Cruz, and Dr. Mary Ann Jilly Ramirez as the adviser talked about their product called "Oyster Mushroom Seasoning Powder" in which oyster mushroom is added as one of the ingredients. It doesn't only give the consumers the flavor they wanted but also a healthier choice, said in the video.
The "Use of poly-betahydroxybutyrate as Housing to Homogenize Growth and Increase Survival of crustaceans in Aquaculture System" of Dr. Gladys L. Pascual won third place under the Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research Category.
Dr. Pascual's entry was to evaluate the potential of biodegradable plastics, particularly the poly-betahydroxybutyrate (PHB) or PHB plastic, as a replacement to common non-biodegradable shelters to shrimp aquaculture such as recycled tires, containers, and PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) pipe.
RICE gives due recognition to the outstanding invention through the Tuklas Award, outstanding utility model through the Unlad Award, outstanding industrial design through the Banghay Award, outstanding creative research through the Likha Award, and outstanding student creative research for high school and college students through the Sibol Award, TAPI website says.
This activity recognizes the indispensability of Filipino inventors and researchers which provides encouragement to men and women inventors and researchers to showcase their inventive and creative capabilities through a form of competition for cash incentives, awards, and bragging rights.
