Three CHTM students receive top learners recognition by HIAP
The Hospitality Institute of America-Philippines (HIAP), Inc. recognized three (3) students from the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Main Campus as top learners for garnering the highest assessment scores in their virtual practicum, as seen in HIAP's Facebook post.
Zar Joyce Robles, Edilie Mangle, and Kisslyn Jabagat are among the 120 students who were recognized from 14 different state universities and colleges (SUCs) and higher education institutions (HEIs) as of June 29, 2021.
Forty-eight (48) of SLSU Main Campus’s Bachelor of Science in Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management (BSHRTM) took part in this program.
This is a remote on-the-job training (OJT) program set for the students as part of their curriculum, while deployment for in-person OJT is suspended by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) due to COVID-19.
HIAP is an international training program that caters Hotel, Culinary, and Tourism training and skills assessment services that “prepares well-rounded graduates for employment opportunities, both locally and internationally, in various positions by providing them globally known educational services and facilities”, its website says.
Flexible Industry Practicum
To date, the majority already completed more than 50% of the Tourism Learning Path where it offers video lessons designed to give students a glimpse of international industry standards.
Assessments were also given to the students which they need to pass to unlock the next learning path. One who failed a particular assessment can try again countless times until the student pass. The assessment shall serve as the basis to identify performing students.
Every week, HIAP sends students’ progress reports to the CHTM office to monitor their performance and assist them with issues and concerns as their direct advisers and mentors.
CHTM Dean Dr. Ingrid M. Uy said that amidst the changing landscape of the academe, the students clearly showed resilience and hard work, and the whole college takes pride in this recognition.
“This achievement is a clear manifestation that there is no situation so difficult and challenging for those who have the passion and cravings for knowledge,” Dr. Uy added.
They are set to end their 2-month virtual practicum journey sometime in July, which they will be recognized virtually.
While in the process of preparing the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and contract, the students started to onboard and access the learning portals on May 17, 2021. HIAP and CHTM officially inked the deal on May 18.
