SLSU-Hinunangan, Project MSMC Strengthen Mangrove Conservation in Padre Burgos

Southern Leyte State University-Hinunangan Campus, in collaboration with Project MSMC (MangroveSediment-Microorganisms-Carbon Dynamics), a DOST-PCAARRD-funded initiative, engaged with the Municipal Local Government Unit (LGU) of Padre Burgos and Barangay Sta. Sofia on March 12, 2025, to advance mangrove conservation efforts.
Led by Project Leader Prof. Ian Navarrete and SLSU-Hinunangan Campus Director Wade Lim, the discussions focused on project updates, policy integration, and community engagement. Key municipal officials, including Mayor Hermenegildo Culpa, participated in dialogues emphasizing the ecological and socio-economic significance of mangrove ecosystems.
A key highlight was the introduction of the Handbook on Mangrove Identification in Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, a resource designed to enhance local awareness and guide conservation efforts. The team also proposed a capacity-building program to equip local leaders with technical expertise in sustainable mangrove management.
In Barangay Sta. Sofia, home to a significant portion of the municipality’s mangrove forest, officials received copies of the handbook and explored strategies for stronger local conservation policies. Discussions led to the proposal of a barangay resolution to institutionalize mangrove protection.
This initiative reflects Southern Leyte State University’s mission to promote sustainable development through research, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. By establishing scientific and policy-driven conservation strategies, SLSU upholds its commitment to empowering communities and safeguarding natural ecosystems.
Aligned with global sustainability efforts, this project supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land), reinforcing the commitment to environmental sustainability and community resilience.
