SLSU-San Juan holds "Innovate to Protect" workshop on Intellectual Property and Patent Drafting

Southern Leyte State University-San Juan Campus, through the Research, Innovation, and Extension Services Office, in partnership with the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office and the Innovation and Technology Support Office, successfully conducted the first session of "Innovate to Protect," a two-part workshop on intellectual property, patent search, and drafting for research methods students across the SLSU system. Held on February 6, 2025, the session focused on IP awareness, patent search, and invention spotting, equipping participants with essential knowledge to protect their innovations. Students from the Industrial Technology, Information Technology, Technology and Livelihood Education, and Business and Management Departments actively engaged in discussions and interactive exercises aimed at enhancing their understanding of intellectual property rights.
The workshop featured esteemed patent drafters Dr. Angel T. Sabusap, Mr. Jerome Jack O. Napala, and Dr. Aiza L. Caseñas as resource speakers. Their sessions provided in-depth insights into identifying potential inventions, navigating patent databases, and evaluating patentability criteria. The second session, scheduled for March 26-27, 2025, via Zoom, will focus on the fundamentals of patent drafting and include a hands-on workshop and presentation of student outputs. This segment aims to strengthen participants' skills in drafting patent documents and securing intellectual property protection for their research projects.
This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to strengthening research-driven innovation and technology transfer. By equipping students with patent drafting expertise, the institution fosters a culture of creativity, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property protection, reinforcing its role in advancing academic excellence and technological development.
The workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goals No. 4 (Quality Education) No. 5 (Gender Equality) No. 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
