SLSU inks partnership with Hindag-an Falls Mountain Resort to establish hydro-electric power system
Southern Leyte State University has entered into a partnership with Hindag-an Falls Mountain Resort to establish a Micro Hydro Power Generation project on the resort premises.
The collaboration was solidified through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Hindag-an, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte.
Under the agreement, Southern Leyte State University will offer technical assistance and expertise services from its Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC) to explore the renewable energy potential available at the resort, with a specific focus on the establishment of a Micro Hydro Power Generation system.
Micro Hydro Power Generation plays a crucial role in sustainable energy development for several reasons.
Firstly, it utilizes the power of flowing water to generate electricity, making it a clean and renewable energy source. Unlike fossil fuel-based power generation, micro hydro systems do not emit harmful greenhouse gases, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Secondly, micro hydro systems are particularly suitable for rural and remote areas that have access to flowing water resources. These systems can provide electricity to communities that are far from centralized power grids, thereby improving energy access and promoting economic development.
By harnessing the power of nearby water resources, the resort can reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources, contributing to energy independence and resilience.
The establishment of a Micro Hydro Power Generation scheme aligns with SDG #7 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
By generating clean and affordable electricity, the resort can support local economic activities, enhance the quality of life for residents, and contribute to the overall development in the province and region.
Representing the university at the MOA signing ceremony were Dr. Jude A. Duarte, the President of Southern Leyte State University, Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President of Research Innovation and Extension Services, Dr. Frederick C. Aniga, Director for Extension Services, Dr. Rhoderick D. Malangsa, Director for Research and Innovation, Engr. Jonelle Tablada, Project Leader and Head of Affiliated Renewable Energy Center, the Dean of the College of Engneering Engr. Julius O. Paler, and other faculty members from the College of Engineering. Mrs. Christina Sabusap, proprietor of Hindag-an Falls Mountain Resort, was present on behalf of the resort.
Through this collaboration, Southern Leyte State U and Hindag-an Falls Mountain Resort aspire to demonstrate the viability and benefits of Micro Hydro Power Generation, encouraging other organizations and communities to adopt similar renewable energy initiatives.
By harnessing the power of nature, this partnership seeks to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solution that supports the well-being of the resort, its surroundings, and the wider community.
