IZN Development Plan 2021 Part II: The Next Big Leap for SLSU KF21 Student Ambassadors
To amplify the preparation and capacitate student leaders for Internationalization (IZN), Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) conducted the IZN Development Plan 2021 Part II: Capacity Building Webinar Series on May 26-28, 2021.
Participated by SLSU key officials, the King Fisher 2021 (KF21) student ambassadors, global mentors, and distinguished set of international resource speakers, relevant topics from innovation, partnerships, programs, opened opportunities for linkages, and virtual platforms for SLSU were discussed to maintain the equilibrium between national priorities and international needs.
In her message, University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes shared her vision for the University in the next five years—to bring the University to international arena and make it globally known.
International speakers Sahariar Hasan Jii Sun (founder of Bloodman-Bangladesh), Pichmonyka Chan (Investment Analyst at Knight Frank and a Young Ambassador of the United Nations), Jia Pei Chin (Marketing Project Team Lead and founder of Feetcare PTE LTD), and Dr. Sumana Chuamnakthong (former student ambassador and currently a member of the International Affairs Staff of Kasetsart University (KU) in Thailand) inspired the young student ambassadors, faculty members, staff and stakeholders of SLSU as they shared their journey of life, leadership and love to serve through their advocacies.
The Director of the International Affairs Office (IAO) Dr. Lilibeth S. Tindugan said that SLSU is exploring what is outside the country to advance its quality education.
Meanwhile, Jose Zalde Samson Jr. of Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) shared the globalization pursuits through relevant and innovative projects. Likewise, through his project called Keep Palm, We Can Thatch This, KF21 Lead Student Ambassador Jerome Amor talked about how such project sustains life and embodies Filipino resilience.
The Regional Manager of Camosun College in Canada, Jennifer Montero, crafted the roadmap of student ambassadors’ journey capturing the various talents and experiences, the highs and lows of life especially during the pandemic.
Montero designed the roadmap according to numerous and inclusive engagements while handling International programs for students in Canada, through Camosun College Student Society’s Sustainability Program, and how it impacted the lives of many young people globally and the rippling effect of their international education experiences to their localities.
“The journey of building meaningful relationships would not be easy but it would be worth it,” Montero said.
The activity was also graced by Dr. Yazrina Yahya, the Deputy Director of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Global. She shared the importance of IZN’s 3Cs— cooperation, communication, and collaboration.
“Students will give power to the university both for home-based and cross border internationalization,” Dr. Yahya said, emphasizing the skills student ambassadors must possess and develop to ascend with flying colors in the global skies.
On the other hand, Dr. Donludee Jaisut, the Associate Dean for International Relations of KU presented the IZN’s 3Ps – Purpose, Protocol, and Portfolio.
The three-day activity solidified the numerous roles of the Office of the Executive Operations and External Affairs, headed by the Vice President Dr. Juanita Costillas, through IAO.
“This event activated SLSU KF21 student ambassadors has provided clarity and direction to their roles, ideals, deliverables, and responsibilities, documenting it while carving on their hearts the commitment they embrace,” Dr. Costillas said.
The Director III CHED-International Affairs Staff Atty. Lily Freida M. Milla was present during the webinar with her talk on becoming a Smart University. She even coined a new hashtag #SmartLeadingandSustainableUniversity, giving a new meaning of ‘SLSU’ as the University aims to become a Smart University. From the institutional growth and the comprehensive implementation of its strategic IZN plan to its local and international impact, SLSU’s steps towards IZN brought fruitage to the University’s ranking and reputation.
