US EL Fellow Joins SLSU, Making History as the University's First International Faculty

A historic first for Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), as it welcomes Prof. Maryann McCrorie Miller, its first international faculty member, a US English Language Fellow (EL Fellow) deployed through the US Embassy's Regional English Language Office (RELO), on August 22, 2025.
Prof. Miller was warmly greeted by the SLSU faculty, staff, and some select students who will be under her class at the SLSU Main Campus. The welcome program also featured cultural presentations, immersing her in the lively and vibrant talents of SLSU and giving her a warm introduction to the Mighty Kingfisher community.
The deployment of Prof. Miller is made possible through SLSU's strengthened partnership with the US Embassy's Regional English Language Office (RELO). This partnership began with an exploratory meeting held on May 23, 2025, where university officials met with Mr. Terrance Toledo, a representative of RELO. During the discussions, both parties laid the groundwork for hosting an EL Fellow, highlighting the program's potential to elevate English language education at SLSU. Practical preparations, including academic planning, housing arrangements, and ensuring the Fellow's safety and well-being, were also carefully addressed.
The English Language Fellow (EL Fellow) Program is a US Department of State initiative that deploys American educators worldwide to strengthen English language teaching and professional development.
Prof. Miller, from Ohio, USA, brings over 34 years of experience in education, including 23 years as an English Learner (EL) Specialist and more than a decade of service at The Ohio State University. She has taught students representing 72 countries and 116 languages, pioneering inclusive language programs that bridge cultural and linguistic diversity. Her lifelong commitment to ensuring that all learners, regardless of background, succeed in education makes her a fitting partner for SLSU's vision of excellence and inclusivity.
As part of her fellowship, Prof. Miller will work closely with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the External Linkages and International Affairs Office (ELIA) through the Center for Foreign Language and Culture (CFLC), where she will contribute to curriculum enhancement, faculty training, and student development in English language learning. Her presence on campus enriches the academic community with international perspectives while providing opportunities for cultural exchange.
Prof. Miller's deployment signifies more than just a first for SLSU; it embodies the university's dedication to quality education, inclusivity, and global partnership.
