OVPRIES Leads Academic Writing Writeshop for First-Year Engineering Students

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (OVPRIES) of Southern Leyte State University, headed by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, hosted a writeshop aimed at strengthening the academic writing skills of first-year engineering students. The activity provided participants with essential guidance in developing well-structured commentary papers, laying a strong foundation for their academic and professional growth.
The program opened with a message of support from Dr. Sy, who emphasized the importance of research and writing as integral competencies for future engineers. The session was facilitated by Mr. Stephen Naul, Research Assistant, who delivered a lecture on effective strategies for critical thinking, academic formatting, and argumentation. He also introduced students to research tools, such as the Scopus database, and guided them in creating their own ORCID IDs to build a professional research identity.
Supporting him during the writeshop were fellow Research Assistants Mr. Eric P. Degorio and Ms. Liezil H. Lucero, who provided additional guidance to ensure that participants received comprehensive support in navigating the writing process. The event was organized under the supervision of Engr. Lelie Lou Bacalla, faculty member of the Electrical Engineering Department.
The writeshop concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, allowing students to clarify their understanding and actively engage in the discussion.
Through this initiative, the OVPRIES continues to demonstrate its commitment to cultivating research-oriented and competent graduates. By integrating technical skills with strong analytical and communication abilities, the office plays a crucial role in shaping students into well-rounded professionals who are prepared to thrive in the evolving field of engineering.
