Southern Leyte State U launches MPC with state-of-the-art basketball court
Southern Leyte State University students will now have a new place to enjoy as the new and improved Kingfisher’s Multi-Purpose Court (MPC) has been officially opened beside the Hotel de SLSU in the Main Campus.
The Student Programs and Services (SPS) in the office of the Student and Auxiliary Services (SAS) inaugurated the refurbished MPC on June 20, 2022 with the Vice President for SAS Dr. Juanita Costillas, Director for Student Affairs and Service Dr. Synamar Yuag, and Sports Development Program Coordinator Aaron D. Espinas officiated the proceedings. Along with the activity is also the opening of the University's state-of-the-art basketball court.
The MPC is lined with a state-of-the-art basketball court where friendly basketball games were immediately held between two teams from the alumni and the varsity teams from Southern Leyte State U and Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU).
University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes is excited about the opportunities that the MPC provides to hone and develop the skills and talents of the students.
“The courts are versatile, creating an escape from the student academic workload where students can be themselves and develop their skills and talents especially in sports," President Yepes said.
The event was graced by two of the biggest names in the field of basketball—former Assistant Coach of Gilas Pilipinas, now the Assistant Coach of Adamson University's basketball team Coach Jem Ryn Betia, and former Gilas Pilipinas player Gary O. David—who watched the friendly competition between EVSU and Southern Leyte State U and gave advise on how to play and win the tournament.
The government, through the General Appropriation Act (GAA), afforded Southern Leyte State U a 20-million fund to renovate both the MPC and the University Grandstand. 16 million of which was allocated to improve the former.
