SLSU-Hinunangan Faculty Advances Research Expertise Through VLIR-UOS International Training Program

Southern Leyte State University – Hinunangan (SLSU-Hinunangan) proudly recognizes Ms. Edelyn P. Nuñez, a faculty member, for her active participation in the VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP)—a prestigious initiative aimed at advancing expertise in citizen science research and environmental monitoring.
The program, a collaborative effort of the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Visayas State University (VSU), and Hasselt University (Belgium), is supported by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR-UOS). It equips participants with advanced competencies in quantitative and qualitative citizen science methodologies, enhancing their ability to conduct rigorous statistical analyses, engage communities effectively, and contribute to sustainable environmental practices.
Ms. Nuñez attended a series of intensive workshops as part of the program. The second workshop, held in Cagayan de Oro City from November 6 to 17, 2023, focused on designing observational and citizen science studies, with practical applications utilizing R programming to improve data analysis.
The third workshop, conducted in Baybay City, Leyte from February 26 to March 8, 2024, emphasized statistical science communication and introduced the use of generalized linear models (GLMs) in R, enhancing participants' ability to analyze and interpret complex research data.
The final workshop, scheduled for March 3 to 14, 2025, in Cagayan de Oro City, will cover critical topics such as data equity, spatio-temporal statistics, and sustainable citizen science practices.
In recognition of her expertise, Ms. Nuñez has also been invited to serve as a resource speaker on Sustainable Data Governance and Policy during the fourth ITP workshop on March 7, 2025. Her presentation will highlight the importance of responsible data management practices, reinforcing the need for ethical and sustainable approaches to research data governance.
