SLSU Bontoc Librarian attends PLAI Congress 2024
Ms. Lowella G. Prado, Campus Librarian of Southern Leyte State University - Bontoc Campus, proudly represented her institution at the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI) Congress 2024, held from November 19 to 22 at the Grand Menseng Hotel.
Themed “Knowledge Integration: Connecting Minds, Empowering Communities,” the annual event gathered librarians and information professionals nationwide to explore strategies for collaboration, innovation, and empowerment through knowledge sharing.
Reflecting on the role of librarians in modern society, Prado remarked, “Librarians are not just keepers of books; they connect various users, such as faculty, students, researchers, and the community. By collaborating with others, they enhance resource sharing, promote skills in using digital tools, and support inclusive programs that engage everyone in society.”
Prado highlighted the Congress’s central theme, emphasizing its intent to empower local communities by providing innovative and responsive spaces that cater to diverse information needs. She elaborated on how this initiative fosters social cohesion, personal growth, and lifelong learning.
“Through knowledge sharing and collaboration among librarians, information professionals, and other stakeholders, access to information resources is strengthened, intellectual enrichment is encouraged, and communities thrive,” she added.
The PLAI Congress serves as a platform to boost librarians’ commitment to innovation and unity while fostering a culture of excellence in the profession. This year’s event reinforced the vital role of libraries in bridging knowledge gaps and inspiring societal development.
Prado emphasized the library’s proactive role in community outreach initiatives and its innovative Library Maker-Space Program, which offers hands-on learning opportunities and nurtures creativity.
“By championing accessible and adaptable digital education, we can empower individuals, especially those in underserved and marginalized communities, to thrive in today’s increasingly digital world,” she stated.
Prado’s participation underscores the dedication of Southern Leyte State University to advancing education and empowering communities through the transformative power of libraries and information services.
This initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
