SLSU’s Computer Engineering Department Empowers Educators with Digital Skills through Capability Enhancement Project
The Computer Engineering Department of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) Sogod District 1, successfully led the Capability Enhancement for Online Education, a need-based extension project aimed at equipping educators with essential digital skills from March 10, 17 and 24, 2023. Aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, this initiative responded to the urgent demand for remote learning solutions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a swift transition from traditional classroom methods to online education platforms.
The project sought to empower teachers and faculty members by providing comprehensive training in three key areas: fundamental computer skills, the use of online educational platforms like Google Classroom, and video editing tools such as Filmora and Canva. Through this hands-on training led by the Computer Engineering Department, educators were better prepared to deliver quality education in a digital environment.
Participants, including teachers from DepEd Sogod District 1, benefited greatly from the initiative, particularly those with limited experience in online platforms prior to the pandemic. The training increased their confidence in managing online classes, creating interactive lessons, and using video editing software to enhance their teaching materials. Beyond technical skills, the project fostered collaboration and a sense of community among educators.
Despite challenges such as varying levels of technological proficiency and limited training time, the project was a resounding success, thanks to the support and guidance provided by the Computer Engineering Department. By aligning with SDG 4, this collaboration between SLSU and DepEd has not only improved the digital literacy of educators but has also strengthened the overall quality of education in the region, ensuring that teachers can effectively adapt to the evolving landscape of online learning.
