Maasin City Campus launches project to promote safe, inclusive schools
Southern Leyte State University Maasin City Campus inaugurated its first-ever research-based extension project, named SHIELDS (Safe, Healthy, and Inclusive Environment of Learning and Development in Schools) on July 17, 2023.
A memorandum of agreement was signed between SLSU-Maasin City Campus and the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Maasin City.
The primary objective of the SHIELDS extension project is to empower teachers with effective strategies for handling bullying cases and other forms of violence that may occur within school premises. By equipping educators with the necessary skills and knowledge, SLSU-Maasin City Campus aims to foster a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students.
Dr. Jonathan Palco, the driving force behind the SHIELDS initiative, presented the core components of the project during the ceremony.
His vision encompasses the establishment of school-based child protection committees and the formulation of relevant policies to further safeguard the well-being of students.
Additionally, the project will also include the development of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to promote advocacy efforts for creating child-friendly educational spaces.
The SHIELDS project marks a step forward for SLSU-Maasin City Campus as it exemplifies the institution's commitment to the well-being of its students and the community at large. This project is in alignment to SDG No. 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG No. 4 (Quality Education), and SDG No. 5 (Gender Equality).
SLSU-Maasin City Campus Director Dr. Maria Estela Roa said that by providing teachers with the necessary tools and support, the university will create an inclusive environment where students can thrive academically and personally.
As the project takes flight, it is expected to positively impact schools within Maasin City and beyond, setting a new benchmark for safe and conducive learning environments throughout the region.
University President Dr. Jude Duarte expressed his confidence in the project's potential to make a lasting difference.
He lauded the collective effort of the university's administration, faculty members, and partners, emphasizing that their dedication to fostering a safe and inclusive environment in schools will leave a lasting legacy.
The ceremony was graced by Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Francis Ann Sy, and Director of Extension Service Dr. Frederick Aniga, SLSU-Maasin City Campus RIES HEad Dr. Magdaleno Samaco, and SLSU-Maasin City Campus Extension Services Coordinator Ms. Juvenal Sumaya.
