Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus Campus English Circle Holds Successful English Month Celebration
The English Circle under the English Education Program of Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus Campus (SLSU-TO) successfully conducted a month-long celebration of English Month with the theme, “Using Technology for Multilingual Learning: Challenges and Opportunities”, throughout November 2024. The event featured various activities that allowed students to enhance their language proficiency, showcase their skills, and engage with peers from different schools.
The English Month celebration kicked off on November 4, 2024, with an opening program that set the stage for an exciting month of events. This was followed by an Inter-College English Quiz Bee competition, where collegiate-level students tested their knowledge of various aspects of English and literatutinuere. The event continued on November 20, 2024, with the much-awaited Inter-High School Debate and Radio Broadcasting competitions, drawing participants from several schools in Tomas Oppus, Bontoc and Sogod.
The celebration culminated on November 29, 2024, with a Bingo Blitz game and an array of student performances. Highlights included a speech choir by first-year students, a vocal solo, a musical by sophomores, and a lively intermission number by the English Circle members. The culmination event provided a platform for students to showcase their talents, intelligence, and wit while fostering a spirit of camaraderie.
As the celebration ended, the overall sentiment was pride and achievement. Dr. Violeta B. Felicilda, Head of the English Education Program, and Mr. Jayson E. Orais, the English Circle adviser, expressed their gratitude to the English Circle officers, members, faculty, and stakeholders who made the celebration successful. Their collective efforts helped make English Month 2024 one of the most memorable for the SLSU-TO community. With its various competitions, performances, and activities, the celebration successfully promoted language proficiency, cultural awareness, and effective communication among students.
This celebration aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, which focuses on Quality Education. Additionally, the activities encouraged collaboration and innovation, contributing to SDG 17, which emphasizes Partnerships for the Goals. Through these efforts, the English Circle has fostered academic growth and empowered students to engage with glocal challenges.
