SLSU-FHTM and LGU Malitbog launches Sustainable Municipal Tourism Development Plan
On September 30, 2024, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) successfully concluded the "Malitbog, Southern Leyte Sustainable Tourism Development Plan (TDP) Crafting" extension project with a turnover and acceptance activity held at the Municipal Gym, Malitbog, Southern Leyte. This momentous event occurred just in time for the celebration of World Tourism Day.
The extension project, which commenced on February 16, 2024, involved comprehensive stages, including situational analysis, tourism rapid assessment, seminar-writeshop on crafting the Tourism Development Plan, the presentation of the TDP draft to the stakeholders, and finally the turnover and acceptance of the plan by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Malitbog. The completion of this project reflects the shared commitment between SLSU and the municipality towards fostering sustainable tourism practices.
Mr. Christian Errol B. Bandalan, the extension project leader, emphasized the importance of creating sustainable tourism strategies tailored to Malitbog's unique context. Hence, in his presentation of the overview, he stressed the project's goals and key outcomes. After that, Tourism Officer Designate Mr. Alrico M. Comahig posed the highlights of the 5-year Sustainable Tourism Development Plan, which included the comprehensive strategies and action plan to strengthen the municipality's tourism sector sustainably and inclusively.
The ceremonial turnover was graced by Mayor Antonio Lura, along with other key officials of the municipality, who stated the importance of this milestone for the future of Malitbog's tourism sector. Also present during the ceremony was the Southern Leyte Provincial Tourism Officer, Mr. Nedgar Garvez, who gave commendation and active support to the plan. The TDP was officially handed over by Dr. Angel T. Sabusap, Extension Director of SLSU, marking the culmination of months of a collaborative effort of the university extensionists, the local government officials, private sector representatives, and the community.
This initiative is part of SLSU-FHTM's ongoing extension efforts to assist municipalities in the province in developing their own Tourism Development Plans that align with global standards for sustainability. Malitbog is the third beneficiary of this project, following the successful collaborations with LGU Hinunangan and LGU Padre Burgos.
By contributing to creating sustainable tourism strategies, this project also supports Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. The FHTM remains committed to extending its expertise and working hand in hand with local governments to ensure sustainable tourism growth and the enhancement of community welfare.
With this, the FHTM is inviting other municipalities to partner and collaborate in invigorating the province's tourism industry.
