SLSU-TO Social Studies Faculty Engages in Leyte-Samar Heritage Forum

The Leyte-Samar Heritage Society, Inc. (LSHSI) hosted a two-day forum titled “Pagsubay han Aton Kabilin: Leyte-Samar History and Heritage Forum” at Hotel Alejandro in Tacloban City on June 6-7, 2024. The event brought together advocates of cultural heritage preservation, including the SLSU-TO Social Studies Faculty, to celebrate and discuss the rich history and culture of the Leyte-Samar region.
Rev. Msgr. Ramon Stephen Aguilos, Chairperson of LSHSI, opened the forum by outlining the society's mission and its commitment to safeguarding regional heritage. The forum was structured into two main themes: history on the first day and intangible cultural elements such as arts, cuisine, and performing arts on the second.
Day one featured a series of panels covering significant historical topics, including the Sto. Niño de Tacloban, the history of Homonhon, Leyte-Samar guerrillas, and regional heritage cuisine and games. Notable speakers included Prof. Rolando Borrinaga and his son George Borrinaga, who shared insights into early European interactions with Eastern Visayas natives and the impact of events like the Balangiga Encounter. The second day highlighted contributions to global markets and performing arts. Hon. Resil B. Mojares, a National Artist for Literature, discussed the global significance of Visayan contributions like abaca and copra, and the role of local shipping pioneers such as the Escaño and Aboitiz families. The forum also showcased cultural performances by the Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company and featured discussions on music and disaster dramaturgy.
The event aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education (SDG 4) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). Overall, the forum fostered discussions on the preservation and celebration of Leyte-Samar’s cultural heritage.
