SLSU-Bontoc spoke to ASA employees on planting suitable mangrove species for right sites
As part of its social responsibility, more than a hundred employees of ASA Philippines Foundation-Southern Leyte, a non-profit, non-stock corporation that offers microfinance services to microentrepreneurs in the Philippines, gathered together for a collective mangrove planting at Brgy. Sto Niño, Bontoc, Southern Leyte on January 20, 2024.
The event, jointly organized by the Foundation for TheseAbled Persons Inc. and the Life-Giving Forest e.V., opened an opportunity for SLSU-Bontoc through Mr. Jimmy Salamida, Dean of the College of Aquatic and Applied Life Sciences (CAALS), to promote its advocacy on planting suitable mangrove species and selecting appropriate site as a first step to sustained community-based mangrove rehabilitation initiatives.
As the first mangrove planting event organized in Bontoc, Southern Leyte, for 2024, 100 nursery-grown mangrove saplings were planted in select patches to replace ST Odette-damaged mangrove trees.
