SLSU-Bontoc BS Fisheries Faculty attends BFAR training as Resource Speaker
Mr. Jimmy Salamida, Faculty Researcher from the Fisheries Department of SLSU-Bontoc, was one of the Resource Speakers of a Training on Fish Processing/Value Adding, Packaging and Labelling, and Entrepreneurial Mind-Setting organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) through the Provincial Fishery Office (PFO), held at the BFAR Training and Display Center, Brgy. Manhilo, Maasin City, Southern Leyte on October 5-6, 2023. The activity, jointly implemented by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), was attended by 25 participants in total, mainly representatives from various fisherfolk associations in Southern Leyte. Representatives from the Agricultural Services Office and the Local Government Units of Tomas Oppus, Sogod, Maasin, and Libagon were also present.
Mr. Salamida shared his expertise on fish processing and value-addition through a lecture demonstration, equipping the participants with the technical know-how relating to the packaging and labeling of smoked fish. He emphasized the basics involved in packaging and labeling and their significance as components of a production line and, overall, as determinants by which a fish product successfully ends up in the market and, eventually, to the consumers. Topics on fish processing and good manufacturing practices and entrepreneurial skills, including the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), were discussed by Ms. Shanna May Caballes and Mr. Dexter De Leon of the BFAR Training Division and Ms. Marilyn M. Durac and Jammae-Ann Cano from DTI, respectively.
The training is primarily aimed at enhancing the economic growth of the fisheries sector in the province of Southern Leyte.
