SLSU-Bontoc Campus Director Gladys L. Pascual, together with Mr. Redney Solomon, Association of Faculty Organization President, paid a courtesy visit to officials of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Southern Leyte (SP- So. Leyte) and got a chance to share the campus’ research and development directions during the SP regular session dated October 2, 2023.
Presided by Hon. Napoleon P. Regis, SP Chair on Economics, Taxation, Commerce, Trade, Industry, and Economic Enterprise Development and Management, matters concerning various initiatives SLSU-Bontoc implements in conserving and protecting the coastal marine ecosystems of Southern Leyte were discussed, including regular monitoring of crown-of-thorns starfish population, pilot testing on the feasibility of trash trap device to reduce marine litter, establishment of mangrove nursery, skills and capacity enhancement trainings and overall, province-wide assessment of marine biodiversity. Exciting prospects of partnership between the Provincial Government and SLSU-Bontoc also surfaced, one of which was the 1-year paid work placement for SLSU-Bontoc Fisheries and Marine Biology graduates as proposed by Hon. Myra C. Rentuza, SP Chair on Tourism, and supported by Mr. Nedgar V. Garvez, Provincial Tourism Officer. The proposal gained a positive response among the SP officials.
On the same day, the SLSU-Bontoc team also had the privilege of visiting Southern Leyte 1st District Congresswoman Hon. Luz V. Mercado. Joined by her supportive better half and the former secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Hon. Roger “Oging” Mercado, the team presented some of their plans for SLSU-Bontoc, which in turn received support from the humble legislator.
