SLSU-Bontoc as implementing partner to DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program
September 27, 2023-- A total of 43 member participants from Hilaan Egg Production and Hitawos Egg Production Associations of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, gathered up at the Hilaan Multi-Purpose Covered Court for a one-day seminar-workshop on Regeneration of Sustainable Innovations and Livelihood Efficient Agri-Technologies, or RESILIENT. It is a multi-phase activity initiated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP). The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, and SLSU-Bontoc jointly implemented the seminar-workshop.
Select student officers from the Association of Agriculture Students of SLSU-Bontoc, under the leadership of Mr. Noel Celeste and Mr. Ericjhon Hinayon, led the activity and set the atmosphere on fire through icebreakers. Ms. Janine Dimzon, the designated Head for Research, Innovations, and Extension (RIE), and Ms. Maria Fe Novere Amor, the Extension Coordinator, gave information on other services SLSU-Bontoc offers.
In his lecture, Mr. Webel Glenn Dublado, DVM, a Faculty of the Department of Agricultural Sciences of SLSU-Bontoc, discussed egg production and various strategies involving layer management. Participants were given an opportunity to ask questions during the open forum session.
Curious, one participant raised whether an egg of a medicated layer is safe for consumption. In response, Dr. Dublado indicated the possibility of an egg from a medicated layer containing drug residue(s), which may be unsafe for consumption. Before awarding certificates, participants shared their general impression and could not thank the seminar workshop organizers enough. Seeing the enthusiasm of the participants, Ms. Rosemarie G. Dilao, Social Welfare Officer II, expressed her full support and, along with Ms. Nerissa Pesquera, SLP’s Implementing Project Development Officer, vowed to continue the partnership with SLSU-Bontoc in implementing its initiative on the RESILIENT program.
After sharing an afternoon refreshment, the organizers and participants walked towards an egg production facility handled by the Hilaan Egg Production Association. Here, another round of fruitful discussion surfaced. Accomplished, participants headed home carrying their certificates and hoped for another visit by specialists from SLSU-Bontoc to guide them on their egg production venture.
