The Southern Leyte State University Emergency Response Volunteer (SLSU-SERVE) and student medics led the conduct of the 4th National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on November 10, 2022 as an answer to the call of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) through the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDDRMC) in promoting disaster preparedness and resilience among the general public.
This is the second face-to-face earthquake drill that Southern Leyte State U participated in since its comeback on September 2022.
All volunteer facilitators underwent a briefing first to know their respective roles and responsibilities, set-up communication lines to connect with areas of assignments and command center, and reaffirm assignments.
Students, faculty, staff and even the clients who were present participated the earthquake drill by performing the "duck, hold, cover" to prevent being knocked over and protect head, neck, and vital organs from potential falling objects.
A simulation of a rapid damage assessment to the buildings and other structures was also done, such as potential fires and downed power lines, in order to ensure the safety of the evacuees when they return to their respective buildings, classroom, and offices.
Southern Leyte State U's participation to the nationwide earthquake drills aims to o increase the knowledge of faculty and staff, students, and stakeholders in evacuation management in case of earthquake, develop preparedness for appropriate response, and build a culture of safety in earthquake-prone community including the University.
SLSU-SERVE is led by its President Jona Mae C. Caro, together with the coordination of the students led by its team leader Dino A. Beringuel and adviser Michael Jhon A. Bolo. The activity is spearheaded by Mr. Gordon B. Opina as the designated DRRM Officer of the Office of the Environmental Management-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (ER-DRRM) of the University.
