Maasin City Campus conducts training on community-based disaster risk reduction, mgmt
The Southern Leyte State University-Maasin City Campus conducted the training on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CBDRM) on July 27-29, 2022 for the faculty and staff volunteers.
The Head of the University Office of Environmental Management-Disaster Risk Reduction Management (EM-DRRM) Mr. Gordon B. Opina and Southern Leyte State U Maasin City Campus Director Dr. Maria Estela E. Roa, together with Mr. Jonas P. Maco of the Philippine Red Cross–Southern Leyte Chapter co-spearheaded the conduct of the said three-day training. This was co-organized by the Chief Security and Safety Officer of Maasin City Campus Ms. Stella Lucie Abaa.
Such undertaking aims to inspire the spirit of volunteerism among faculty, and staff by equipping them with emergency response and early recovery interventions and upholding their commitment and dedication to serving humanity. It is one of the capacity-building initiatives under the thematic area of preparedness, response, and early recovery.
Apart from Mr. Maco, among the distinguished volunteers are Community Development Officers and Registered Social Workers from the Philippine Red Cross-Southern Leyte Chapter, namely Rodson I. Basco, Leony M. Angkoy, Jonna E. Macul, and Ar-jay Dumalagan.
The training is one of the expressed needs of the city and province and as a campus to be prepared as responders in line with the celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month. Moreover, it is the response to the growing need of the university’s community for safety and resilience.
Looking forward to more training, Southern Leyte State U Maasin City Campus will continue to pool volunteers that will act to strengthen the organization of SLSU’s Emergency Response Volunteers (SERVE-SLSU) Corps.
