Food tech students, faculty participate in int’l engagements, get recognitions from a Dutch org
Bachelor of Science in Food Technology students from Southern Leyte State University were recognized internationally for their participation in various international activities organized by Nuffic Netherlands Education Support Offices (Neso), a Dutch organization for internationalization in education.
Ms. Janaica Marie Ragas, Ms. April Joy Ruiz, Ms. March Tresha Morano, Ms. Eden Vina Grate, and Ms. Elvie Villacorta are one of the social media favorite winners of the short video-making competition during the 2022 Southeast Asia and Bangladesh Youths for Sustainable Food Systems. The announcement was made on April 15, 2022, where they received a cash prize of €100 or around ₱ 5,000.00
The Southeast Asia and Bangladesh Youths for Sustainable Food System is organized by Nuffic Neso, NL Alumni Network offices in Indonesia & Vietnam, and ROTASI Institute and Dunia Akademisi. The purpose of this competition is to raise awareness among young people about sustainable food systems.
Ms. Grate also took part in the online activity in line with the Nuffic 70th Anniversary Symposium: Shaping Futures, as one of the resource speakers. The Shaping Futures Symposium is a hybrid event with online and offline participation options which took place on April 21, 2022.
It can be recalled that Ms. Grate, together with other two Food Tech students Ms. Jolina Ladan and Mr. Rovic Oppus, won the Changemaker Challenge last year during the Orange Talk Series #5 Special Edition in celebration of the International Youth Day. As a result, their undergraduate study entitled "Rice to Rise: Development and Utilization of Rice Hull Paper Bag in Rice Retail Stores in Southern Leyte, Philippines is currently being funded by Nuffic granting them € 5,000 or ₱ 300,000.00
Mr. Brayan Bornias, the Program Chairperson of the Department of Food Science and Technology (DFoST), participated in the 8th series of Orange Talk, a special edition commemorating the first anniversary of the #EmpowerYouth4Food campaign. The talk was about the role of youth in strengthening linkages between rural-urban agriculture in Southeast Asia.
Such talk took place on April 22, 2022 where Mr. Bornias was one of the three panelists alongside experts from Vietnam and Indonesia.
This Orange Talk is part of #EmpowerYouth4Food campaign, which highlights the challenges and opportunities of youth-led innovation for sustainable agriculture and food systems in Southeast Asia and Bangladesh.
Nuffic Neso with NL alumni networks and Dutch coalition partners launched the #EmpowerYouth4Food campaign on April 22, 2021 as part of the effort to inspire the young generation in Southeast Asian countries and Bangladesh to become more involved in shaping the future for sustainable agriculture.
