Free access to Science Direct's journal articles granted to Southern Leyte State U
The Southern Leyte State University is a recipient of institutional support from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NCRP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for free scientific journal articles in Elsevier's Science Direct.
Science Direct is a full-text database offering journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and 11,000 books and provides access to a large bibliographic database of scientific and medical publications of the Dutch publisher Elsevier, its website says. It hosts over 18 million pieces of content from more than 4,000 academic journals and 30,000 e-books.
The provision of remote access was accorded to Southern Leyte State U-Hinunangan Campus in September 2021 and granted all the other five (5) campuses free access to the database. It includes digital archives that reach way back as far as 1823. It is the largest online platform in the world, and the leading science and health information provider. It also contains information resources in the fields of health sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences.
This is an initiative of NRCP to empower partner higher educational institutions (HEIs) and Research and Development Institutes (RDIs) by providing them easy retrieval of relevant and valuable data for their research studies.
The Head of the Research, Innovation and Extension Services of Hinunangan Campus Dr. Ian A. Navarrete said that this privilege helps increase the university’s productivity through quality publications and attracts more faculty members to get into research.
“DOST encourages the maximum use of this database as references in evaluating research proposals and projects. Let's take advantage of this", he said, calling the grant a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity.
It was in March last year when DOST, through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology (PCIEERD), renewed its subscription for access to Elsevier’s peer-reviewed journals for researchers in the Philippines, bolstering the country’s research and development capabilities.
The free subscription to Elsevier's Science Direct is valid until December 31, 2023.
